install git-core & subversion git clone svn co www.lyx.org Git is a free & open source, distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. Every Git clone is a full-fledged repository with complete history and full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access or a central server. Branching and merging are fast and easy to do. Git is used for version control of files, much like tools such as Mercurial, Bazaar, Subversion, CVS, Perforce, and Visual sourcesafe.

    @lakakid I’ve always found it’s better to jump right in to a harder distribution and learn from there. Some good ones (I use both) are Arch and Gentoo. (Be warned: gentoo installs are worse than…well…dieing)

    pretty much Ubuntu here because I don’t mind using apt-get a few times. And what can i say, in a lot of cases i prefer terminal over gui, i’m just a terminal guy :-)

    It’s good for beginners because it contains a lot of the packages you are going to install anyways. If you already have Ubuntu and it is working fine, just stay with it.
