    Generally you don’t need to install drivers under linux, everything just plugs and plays. Your motherboard and DVD should both be fine. If you want to play dvd movies you will need to add the dvd player codecs, info on doing that is on the ubuntu website.

    Best advice – try it out and see. Most modern hardware is supported fine, but some cheapo-windows only based wifi cards and modems still don’t work great unless you force it to use your windows drivers.

    well, there is a way to run it in live mode off of a external hard disk, but i dont know if that is particularly what you had in mind..

    i havent heard of installing straight from a hardrive though

    thanks for the videos, I tried installing the ubuntu i downloaded a long time ago ( 8.04) onto my pc and when I went for update there was a error so Im going to follow through with you on getting ubuntu 8.10

    is it possible to install ubuntu straight from the hard drive while in another version of linux. im trying to install ubuntu but it wont fit on a 700mb cd so i installed puppy linux instead and am trying to install ubuntu now.
