@MegaManNeo it’s definitely an interesting new interface.

@thisweekinlinux Well I’m testing out the Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook beta, and it does come with Gnome. You access this by choosing “Ubuntu Desktop Edition” at the login screen.

  3. MegaManNeo says:

Sorry for that late comment but I look forwards to the Unity interface as I like to buy a netbook which got a resolution of 1024×600 as usual netbooks do.
Sadly it got even more Mac-like compared to the typical Gnome because I like things to be original, but for usual work the Unity interface should work just fine.

Can’t wait for the changes Maverick got for us in like 1 month :]

@thisweekinlinux I meant for users to customize everything. Like install themes and other stuff like that, which makes Linux fun to use. I read this in a blog from some long time Linux user. But it’s just something I read. I would still use Linux though.

  5. thisweekinlinux says:

@PC4LinuxFreak really? it feels to me like they’re going out of their way to customize more and more with each release. Perhaps I misunderstood.

I’ll say this, they do go out of their way to at least try to innovate as far as look-and-feel.

  6. PC4LinuxFreak says:

I believe that Ubuntu is getting away from fully customizing the desktop options as they release new versions of the OS. It is unfortunate, but at the same time, I guess it keeps it more stable. I don’t know what to think, but it stills looks better than other Linux OS in my opinion.

@experimental0000 thanks very much. :) I’ve had weird issues getting the webcam to sync correctly, so I haven’t been using it as much.

  9. experimental0000 says:

@thisweekinlinux me too, it looks awesome and if I had a netbook with a touchscreen it would definitely feel intuitive I’m watching some of your linux distros vids at the moment. it’s cool to see how well the webcam works in picture quality even if it’s not lip syncing as good. your vids are very professional :) I can almost see something like this as from a magazine like Maximum PC’s “no BS podcast’.

  10. thisweekinlinux says:

@experimental0000 agreed entirely. It’s an interesting new interface, and I’m hoping it turns out well for 10.10.

  11. experimental0000 says:

Since it’s an Alpha and not a full on distro, it still has bugs/kinks to be worked out hence all the problems you’re having. I agree with metalx1000 that it does look alot like it’s geared toward a touch interface like smartphones. (the left side icon squares look like smartphone app buttons)

@TheSniperofDeath As far I know they’ve got prebuild iptables, as always, everything works (usability >> security). If you want to change your firewall settings, you may want to install on of many iptablesGUI’s (well, I know just 3 GUIs, bu there are more). In my opinion, console can do much more work, much faster than dumb gui (consoles are talkative, you get direct debug).

  13. thisweekinlinux says:

@metalx1000 that’s a very good point. I think I tried click and hold the first time I looked at it, but I can’t remember.

  14. metalx1000 says:

My guess is that the right click doesn’t do much because maybe they are thinking about touch screen. On many touch screen interfaces you click and hold to get right click options. Maybe that is how this works. Click and hold. It’s just a guess.

  15. thisweekinlinux says:

@darthchaosofrspw2009 honestly, I’ll probably end up with Mint on my netbook (it’s already there)

  16. darthchaosofrspw2009 says:

@thisweekinlinux If that’s the case, then I’ll either stick with Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 or switch to either Mint 10 LXDE or Peppermint One.

  17. thisweekinlinux says:

@TheSniperofDeath I would definitely like to see a graphical firewall configuration app get added to the default Ubuntu installation, with some sort of notification that you need to check it at least.

  18. TheSniperofDeath says:

@thisweekinlinux i think they should put more security on the terminal because it does most of work for Ubuntu and also the built in firewall should configure panel when you first install Ubuntu(instead of going to the package manger and installing “Firewall Configuration” or other firewalls).

  19. thisweekinlinux says:

@CJay554 well, from what someone said earlier in the comments, the buttons on the taskbar aren’t going to be there long-term. Not sure about the ones on the windows themselves. Probably.

  20. thisweekinlinux says:

@TheSniperofDeath Security is definitely important, though are there any areas you’d specifically like to see improved upon?

  21. thisweekinlinux says:

@darthchaosofrspw2009 I don’t believe it is. In fact, I don’t believe they’re including even the default Gnome desktop interface like they used to either. :/

  22. MetalShreader says:

@darthchaosofrspw2009 i dont know, but i sure hope so.

  23. thisweekinlinux says:

@lbaquerizo I think the PPA way wouldn’t be too difficult, but you do run the risk of things breaking.

  24. lbaquerizo says:

@thisweekinlinux I am lost in that subject so i rather wait for an automatic update

  25. darthchaosofrspw2009 says:

@MetalShreader Yeah I like the old netbook UI better than Unity. Is the original netbook UI included in Maverick?
