The reason why it’s “free” is because it’s made by people who enjoy making it “work”; there is such a thing as a passion for programming. People who have a passion for it obviously will work hard to make it work fine, and it does. Linux isn’t perfect, but neither is Mac or Windows.
And so what if DOS boots under 3 seconds? The programs being run are bogged down by Vista/7’s excess commit charge regardless, and being torn between piracy or over $2,000 in programs? Duh.

Yes, DOS boots in under 3 seconds and runs programs near instant. Its faster than Linux. Also, Linux’s API’s and ABI’s change constantly. Linux is not stable for this very reason.
Free, not a selling point as companies something that “works.” Not something thats “free.”
