Review – Mandriva Linux 2010 – Part 1/2

Mandriva Linux is a fine beginner Linux Distro and I think it combines a nice mix of reasonably cutting edge applications, stability and polish all together to make one brilliant Linux distribution. @Techsnap

With debs you just double click them and then press OK, a GUI does the work for you.

  2. Techsnap says:

What? I’m talking about building .debs for redistributing not installing them, you’re describing installing a .deb file with a system that has gdebi installed.

  3. Techsnap says:

I prefer RPMs over DEBs, for one they’re easier to build.

Running Mandriva One now. Only negatives, no progress bars etc when its resizing partitions, so if you’re not sure about Linux you may think it has stalled, it hasn’t. I’ve never used an RPM based distro before, always been apt-get debs etc, so this is really nice, and the rpms so far are installing very easily. Havn’t touched the command line once so far.

Mandriva!! I’ve always liked this distro for it’s simple layout, support for 3rd party video cards & mp3 playback out of the box.

The Mandriva powerpack is great for newcomers who don’t want hassles.

    1. When installing, does it give you the option to not install a bootloader?
    2. Don’t the LY say you only need to restart for kernel updates?

I tried Spring 09 a few months ago. This one looks like it’s made a lot of improvements. I’ll have to try it out.

    I enjoyed the vid

I will show the “Configure Your Computer” program in the next video. It really has some nice tools for configuring the system.

  9. billgoldbergmania says:

The install was done just clicking next and keeping the defaults.

Doesn’t seem hard for newcomers. :p

I like the distro, I think it’s brilliant, It’s multi part so there will be more of it soon.

  11. twitch6000 says:

If thats the case no os is for starters. As every os gives you options to tweak and toy with. Even Ubuntu and Windows .

  12. twitch6000 says:

I was wondering when you were gonna review this distro, nice vid.

  13. Techsnap says:

I don’t think it has many options to configure, how do you mean exactly?

  14. frvfilms says:

not bad, but its not beginner level since it has tooo many options to configure the average user only wants one or two

  15. Techsnap says:

It’s a good piece of work, this is what I’d recommend to people who want to try out Linux for the first time due to the polish.

Wow, that looks quite nice. I particularly like the fact that they didn’t just use the stock KDE artwork. It’s almost like they give a shit.
