Mint is Ubuntu-based, so they are quite the same. Some things are just working out-of-the-box in Mint(for example mp3 codecs). But all of the preinstalled things in Mint, you can install at Ubuntu as well. Mint just saves some time But if you want to learn more about your OS, you should do this things yourself and choose Ubuntu.
PS: imho the colours of Ubuntu suck
