This is a tutorial on how to install Globalmenu in Ubuntu. Globalmenu is a GNOME Panel application that integrates the menu bars of your programs into the GNOME Panel, rather than the program itself. This is similar to what you see in OS X style Operating Systems. For Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid, you will need to add these 2 PPAs to your repository (System – Administration -Software Sources). You can find the PPAs in this link (follow Karmic instructions if you’re using 10.04): code.google.com -You will be prompted to refresh your software sources upon closing your Software Sources window. -Navigate to your Software Center (Applications – Ubuntu Software Center) and search for “globalmenu” -Install the “GNOME panel applet of Global Menu” selection. -Restart your desktop session, add globalmenu to your GNOME Panel and you’re done! –ALTERNATE INSTALL VIA TERMINAL– sudo add-apt-repository ppa:globalmenu-team/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu Links: code.google.com
@passionfearmisery as far as I know, it doesn’t work with Firefox out of the box, and I haven’t really gone too far out of my way to see if there’s a way to get it working with it. I know it to not work with VLC and the OpenOffice Suite as well.
I hear Ubuntu is going to include its own Globalmenu in the 10.10 Netbook edition, so there’s a good chance it’ll be in the repository so us Desktop users can grab it as well. Maybe it’ll have some tweaks, but I can’t say for sure.
hey thanks for the tutorial… it works perfect. one question… it dosen’t seem to work with firefox or with open office. it just gives a title on the bar. no options… if you know how to fix it i would really appreciate your help. thankyou once again
That background is super fucking hot yes
I found this tutorial helpful. Changing karmic to lucid was where I was slipping up, I think. Many thinks.
Do you have any idea how to change the drop down menus from the default gray background color to a white one instead?
So I’m attempting to create a firefox atmosphere that uses as little display real estate as Chrome. I found this plugin to make the tabs on the top
“Tabs on Top 1.4.4″
Add on the plugin for the HIDE CAPTION TITLEBAR PLUS……
Hide Caption Titlebar Plus (Smart) 1.1.2
…and we’re almost there… someone let me know as soon as someone figures out how to get the globalmenu to work with firefox!!!
Thanks.
it says the repo is not availible any more
Hi, you have a great tutorial. What theme did you have install?
This worked perfect except the menu on firefox stays there it doesnt go up to the pannel
but on other programs it does right
Very nice tut! subscribed
@chaide Cool, thanks.
That’s a little terminal application called cowsay. “sudo apt-get cowsay” will install it. After it’s installed, typing “cowsay Whatever you wanna say” will make your terminal cow say silly things.
I noticed that when you open a terminal, you get a little ASCCI animal with a funny quote or tip or something. How did you get that? I know it’s in Mint…
You did not mention that this does not work on all applications, mainly Firefox.
Thank you for this. Very helpful indeed.
Thank you! It’s Avant Window Navigator running in ‘Panel Mode’.
You can get it in your terminal (sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator) or search for it in the Ubuntu Software Center.
You can find it in Applications : Accessories after it’s installed.
wow fantastic tutorial =)
what is your bottom panel called? (kinda looks like the windows 7 superbar)
Thanks! I’m glad my boredom is beneficial to others, haha.
I’ve got a couple more tutorials on the backburner for the near future, so stay posted!
Thumbs up again! Dude, you do really good tutorials. Im gonna get this on my lappy. That menu looks just like it does on my iMac. Sweet!
