How To INSTALL Backtrack (Linux) In A Virtual Machine - Part 1
Monday, February 08th, 2010 | Author: admin
This tutorial shows how to INSTALL Backtrack 4 to a VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) in vmware Player or vmware Workstation along with vmware Tools.. These steps can be used to install any Linux OS or even Windows OS. Keep in mind, this isn’t the same as referencing an ISO directly but rathering installing the OS as you would on your hard-drive while still remaining Virtual. I also go over how to change your resolution in Backtrack, login as a root user, and install vmware Tools. LINKS: Backtrack 4 Download: www.backtrack-linux.org vmware Player: www.filehippo.com Enjoy

Once you’ve logged into the desktop you can do the following to create a new user:
- Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management
- Click on Administrator Mode (Enter in your current password)
- Select New and proceed with creating the desired user-account. Close out when done.
- Open a Terminal (Shell) window? and tpye: kdesu konqueror
- Enter / as the location and Right-Click on the Home directory -> Properties -> Permissions and grant View/Modify to Group/Other

I’m really baffled as to why some users encounter this issue but regardless. You should be able to login with the default credentials:
Username - root
Password - toor

yes i had the same problem.
do as he mentions..
also there is a slight difference in what you want to do and what you will do in the end:P
but changing your password should be ok with you. also, the default passcode is root for name, an toor for password.. thank cj for this:P

Also, be sure to have the option to “Apply changes to all subfolders and their content” is selected.

when i try to drug and drop from vista to Backtrack, i cant. but from backtrack to vista it is possible. but, if i try to copy paste, from both directories then it can be done. i was too sleepy yesterday that my brain stuck:D
also about the root and toor, do you know how to change them from the inside to something different?

Part two shows how to install VMWare Tools. After you proceed with the installation it should say it completed. You can just power off or reset the VMDK. It will always still in your VMWare so you don’t have to worry about it deleting itself or something.
Monday, 8. February 2010
@mushroomHEADBANGERS i found my way and i managed to install it.
i also recorded it case you want to see what i did and correct me if i did any bullshits.
if i want to turn off the VMDK i will just use power off? or something else??also i thought that drug and drop would work..do i have to type anything extra so that VMware tools start fanctioning??

That’s very odd. Try closing out of the install and re-launching it. Ensure you don’t click twice or anything. You could always try logging in with the default credentials too:
root
toor

Cj can you explain this??: 9:03 you are on step 4..
when i click on next, it loads the partition.. but after that, it takes me straight to step 7 without letting me edit the name and the pass code as you do!!i did it twice and it did the same!!and i just dont know what pass and login to give..
