Question of the video: Do you like the idea of Mint being a rolling release, or rolling release distros in general? @TobiSGD I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks for the info.
@thisweekinlinux It does not work propertly with Ubuntu 10.04, same symptoms as Ubuntu 9.10. Linuxmint8 the sound worked fine and does not work in linuxmint9, which makes no sense to me.
@TheMuffinManshow haha. no BSOD’s in Linux Land, my friend.
Lol, at 3:20 i thought you got a BSOD.
@frvfilms *shudder*
ubuntu will be the only distro to live into the future, and all other distros will be ubuntu offspring
@polopolo150 yeah it is.
I think I gonna use windows now for FTD and Usenet, which automaticly makes linux on my PC useless. (While not 100% useless, I am still creating a movie script now for a major dutch movie company. ^^)
But thankfully, I have a “linux-based” Playstation 3, so I don’t say goodbye to linux yet.
/watch?v=aZhPK7IR-qU amazing what Linux can do.
@polopolo150 Very weird… :/
@thisweekinlinux That’s the one I have been using.
I also tried the ubuntu one, same error.
and the linux mint version refers me to ubuntu.
@polopolo150 I haven’t tried it, but they’ve got a page for installing it on Debian. Have you gone through the steps there? ftd4linux.nl/wiki/index.php/Debian_installatie
@thisweekinlinux OpenFTD, a program which shows the latest posts on Usenet. It’s a linux port of the Windows version: FTD
Sadly it doesn’t work very good with wine.
So I have no other choice. Or I REALLY have to think about still about installing it on Windows 7 and making my PC more slower then it needs to be.
@polopolo150 What program was it that you couldn’t get running?
@schmidtbag agreed. someone mentioned there was something like 77 Ubuntu variants on Distrowatch right now…
The incompatible thing is probably that Ubuntu is Debian + other stuff, so Mint Debian might not run Ubuntu packages.
@BeeFive13 high five for that one, man
I have been using Linux Mint Debian Edition for a few hours, and it’s amazing! everything just works out-of-the-box without any problems, which gives me enough reason to leave Ubuntu.
Except one reason, there is a program which I always use on Ubuntu, and one of the only reasons I keep using Linux everyday. They have a Debian version, but it won’t let me install it, because my packages are too new. :’(
Since I want my windows to be as clean as possible, I have to go back to Ubuntu.
i’m glad mint decided to do this – theres more than enough ubuntu variants anyway. i feel like this is just going to be a bit more work for the mint devs but not like i care – i use debian myself. i started using debian because i hate the direction ubuntu has been going in since late 2009.
i’m not sure what is meant by “ubuntu incompatible” when ubuntu is debian based…
anyways what i’d like to know is is mint debian based on debian lenny or squeeze? because lenny is horribly outdated
I like rolling release. Arch is my primary OS right now.
@thisweekinlinux Hmm… Sounds like something to stick at.
@egadw I got Compiz working pretty decently, I just can’t find an emerald theme I really like yet (haven’t looked much, either)
@thisweekinlinux I still have some rough edges with Arch that I can’t figure, eg getting compiz to work properly and emerald to replace my old gtk theme entirely
@egadw ooh, that’s rough. I’ve thought about dual booting, but I think at this point I’ve got most things set up the way I like them in Arch (found a quicker way to get things reinstalled. might make a video about it)
@thisweekinlinux What I do is this: I have linux mint LXDE(with extra) on a USB and Arch on my comp. My school requires us to use some proprietary software, of which the drivers connecting the hardware on the school and my computer won’t work unless it’s a debian based system, since their only binary(with support) for linux is ubuntu 9.04 and up.
@juppukun you can definitely upgrade Ubuntu and Mint from one version to another, it can just be quirky (a lot of major changes, sometimes things just don’t go right)
@thisweekinlinux
Interesting point. It is indeed a bother to reinstall every six months so I thought since ubuntu can be upgraded directly, like I did before with otd versions cds, I thought maybe this could work as well since mint is based on ubuntu
