lockergnome.com – A user’s first time with Linux can leave a lasting impression that they will carry with them for some time. For many, that first impression was love at first sight. For others, the particular distro or hardware configuration may have made the experience less than enjoyable, leaving the user with a bad taste in their mouth for Linux. But, what if you sit an average user in front of Ubuntu for the first time? How do regular people (non-geeks) feel about the interface? Surprisingly, Joe Pirillo did quite well for his first time around. http go.tagjag.com www.lockergnome.com profiles.google.com twitter.com www.facebook.com

On today’s episode of HakTip we’re checking out Get Linux, an ISO downloader for Windows. getlinux.sourceforge.net is a free and open source portable tool made by Dev-Fire used to obtain the newest and coolest in the Linux distro world. The program seems to run pretty fast, and the list of Linux distros is super long- there are a ton in here that I’ve never heard of (great way to delve into new distros!). In my test, I downloaded Caine in about 5 minutes on my ISP. Do you have a different tool for Linux distros? Hit us up — tips@hak5.org, or simply leave a comment below. And be sure to check out our sister show, www.hak5.org for more great stuff just like this.

Windows 7 64bit = NTFS Debian Linux 64bit = EXT4 Toshiba L300 single core celeron, 2G of ram Taken from my phone so there is no screen recording software slowing down the systems. Windows 7 had the performance profile selected and no antivirus software installed. Debian Linux was using the default settings and there is no need for antivirus software. 1.4GB mp4 video file. The results: Windows 7 took roughly 1:12, so the average is roughly 20MB/s Debian Linux took roughly 50 seconds, so the average is roughly 28MB/s
