In-depth review of Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal Final Release. Feel free to skip sections of the video using the chapter timings below: 0:18 – Installation (Dual boot & Slideshow) 5:28 – Pre-Installed Software 9:36 – Desktop & Unity Features (inc Compiz) 12:49 – Installing Software (few apps to try) 14:51 – Conclusion This video is aimed more for people who are new to Ubuntu, but there is something here for everyone. I show the Unity 3D Desktop Environment in action on a full system install and cover a verity of topics including: 1: Installation – Dual booting with Windows 7 and using the automated partitioning. 2: Look at Pre-Installed Software Canonical have included on the install disk, including LibreOffice 3.3, Firefox 4, Banshee Media Player, Ubuntu One, Software Centre, Puzzle Games, and a 3D shooter. 3: Fancy Desktop Features – Tutorial on setting up Compiz effects and Coloured Mouse Cursors 4: Installing Software and suggestions of a Few Applications to try: Chromium, Gimp image editor, Inkscape vector graphic, Openshot, Zaz and Sauerbraten. 5: Conclusion 85% – A nice modern desktop environment, very easy to use, but not necessarily for everyones taste. Next version of Ubuntu (11.10) should offer a more customisable version of Unity. Website: www.ubuntu.com Download www.ubuntu.com

Quick video on how to change the two default taskbars / panels Ubuntu has and put them into one panel at the bottom of the screen. You end up with Menu, Program list, Sound, email, Clock, Gwibber, and Shutdown button in one panel so it looks similar to KDE, LXDE, Windows, etc… Also looks good with one panel when using a Widescreen monitor. First part of the video applies to Maverick Meerkat (10.10), Lucid Lynx (10.04), and Karmic Koala (9.10). Last part of the video I show how to do a similar change with Classic Desktop in Natty Narwhal (11.04), but it doesn’t work quite so well because application menus appear in the top panel.

In-depth look at Ubuntu Natty Narwhal Alpha 3 – The final Alpha milestone for Natty Narwhal. I show Unity 2D & 3D as well as Classic GNOME Desktop working. Review also shows updated Ubuntu One Control panel, and I discuss the changes Canonical have made to Banshee stores – revenue from Amazon split 75% / 25% with Canonical taking the lions share and remainder going to GNOME. But a big change is that the Canonical will be giving some revenue to GNOME from their Ubuntu One store. All very debatable… Main Changes since Alpha 2: Unity now usable Banshee donation structure changed Kernel updated to 2.6.38-5 New Ubuntu One Control Panel Firefox updated to v4 Beta 12 Unity 2D available in Software Centre Wayland available in Software Centre Still to come: Improved support for Touchpads, and Touch devices with uTouch. Improvements to Gwibber Reduction in startup time Beta 1 scheduled 31st March 2010 Review done in Virtualbox v4.04, which is now working with the updated X.Org system in Ubuntu.
