twitter.com – facebook.com – chris.pirillo.com – Over at Lockergnome.net, Luke asked where there are so many different Linux distros. Linux is awesome, there’s no doubt about it. The beauty of Linux is that it is open-source, and anyone can change it how they see fit. You can take Linux as an operating system, give it different themes and choices and generally make it to your liking. Some people want certain choices and features, while others want something entirely different. This is why you’ll find so many different flavors of Linux. http – lockergnome.net

This is the 11m cut of Don Hopkins (I think) showing off the original Linux port of SimCity on Red Hat, now known as Fedora. Without the use of DOSbox! If you want to play SimCity on Linux-based machines again, search for Micropolis which is based of the original source from this video. Most of the controls work, expect multiplayer, and the UI is arranged differently. I’ll be showing off Micropolis playing on Ubuntu mt desktop sooner or later. Just thought I share this rare moment in history. Yeah, I’m a huge fan of the franchise. Fore more info: wiki.laptop.org

Screencast style Review and failed attempt at a Install Tutorial of Fedora 13.1 Community Remix OS with Linux Mint Menu 1.5GB ISO 32bit. This is a Red Hat RPM like Linux-based OS called Fedora and a remix created by some community people who added the Linux Mint custom Menu with a search function to try to make it more user-friendly. This guest OS failed to install inside the Sun VirtualBox Virtual Machine which was running on Kubuntu 6.10 64bit host OS. Original video production by the www.OSGUI.com Tech Show.
This is a demo of my Fedora 12 desktop, running Compiz Fusion for 3d effects (I did have to do some work to code my Nvidia drivers to get 3d enabled effects.) I am also running a AWN dock with the “squish” feature enabled to make my dock icons jump. I have on Wiggle Windows which is the windows that shake around and snap into place. I have 3d Cube enabled, with features like transparent cube and things like that (you can have a much higher number of workstations, I just use 4). I am working to install a video capture straight from the desktop, but recordmydesktop and others don’t seem to work in good quality, not sure what is wrong, if anyone has ideas, pleassse help me! Fedora 13 (GNU/Linux) Acer Aspire One 532h-2789 (netbook) N450 1.66Ghz 1GB ram -6.5 to 7 hours battery (streaming audio, 50K Firefox web page reload per 5 seconds, several shells, irc and all traffic over an ssh tunnel. Unreal II / PM by Purple Motion of Future Crew (1993) Unreal II – The 2nd Reality by Skaven of Future Crew Aquaria – www.bit-blot.com Humble – www.wolfire.com Fedora 13 (beta) on an Acer Aspire One 532h-2789 running Eclipse and the Android emulator, firefox, open office calc and Aquaria. Basic external view of machine and working sleep functions etc. Overall Id rate this a 4 of 5 star netbook. The battery lasts about an hour less than advertised with my usage. I dont like the idea of paying an MS tax, that is paying for something Ill never use and consider it illegal and unethical. The keyboard is quite nice, the display sharp, it barely gets warm under heavy loads, all hardware has been working flawlessly and the install went without a single issue. The power cord retainer is trash and will fall apart the instant you use it. They should spend the money they use on the mass number of stickers on the device and packaging to improve small things such as that retainer. Id recommend this netbook to any linux user in need of something light weight, long battery life and wanting to do basic computing tasks.
